In addition to the concert podium, Wölfel has also conquered the stage: in the role of Claire in the German debut of John Lunn’s The Maids (Semperoper Dresden), in the Monteverdi Cycle, e.g. as Ottone in L‘Incoronazione di Poppea (Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf-Duisburg), as Oberon in Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream (National Theatre in Mannheim), as the devil in Detlef Glanert’s Jest, Satire, Irony and Deeper Significance at the National Theatre in Mannheim, at the Steirischer Herbst festival in Graz and at the Opéra National de Paris in Bernhard Lang’s The Theatre of Repetitions with the Klangforum Wien, in the male lead of the Gluck opera Orfeo ed Euridice and as Tolomeo in Giulio Cesare (at venues including the Hamburg Staatsoper, Cologne Opera, Händel-Festspiele Karlsruhe). Wölfel was convincing as Helicon in the debut performance of Detlef Glanert’s Caligula (Frankfurt and Cologne), as Fjodor in Boris Godunow at the Semperoper Dresden, as Nurse Delfa in Francesco Cavalli’s baroque carnival opera Giasone (Frankfurt Opera) and as Edgar in Aribert Reimann’s Lear (Frankfurt Opera and Berlin Comic Opera). In the 2010/11 season, the agenda included his debut as Artemis in Henze’s Phaedra at the Staatsoper Berlin, Sorceress (Henry Purcell, Dido and Aeneas) in Barrie Kosky’s production, and a double role as Prince Orlofsky and as Frosch in Christof Loy’s new production of Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss (both at the Frankfurt Opera). Since 2007, Martin Wölfel has held teaching positions at the Folkwang University in Essen and at the Robert Schumann School of Music and Media in Düsseldorf. With the Kronenburg classes, he has also founded his own master class project for singers and vocal students.
