Proficiency in German
Applicants must demonstrate an adequate command of the German language for a bachelor’s program, a master’s program or a doctoral program.
This applies not only for enrollment in the first semester, but also for enrollment in higher semesters.
Up-to-date language proficiency at the following levels is required:
a) The final exam for the B1 certificate (according to the Goethe Institute classification system)
for the master’s program in orchestral playing
b) The final exam for the B2 certificate (according to the Goethe Institute classification system)
for the programs in Music and Music Promotion with the corresponding majors and for the programs Music and Media and Audio and Video and the master’s programs Klang und Realität and Artistic Music Production.
c) The final exam for the C1 certificate (according to the Goethe Institute classification system)
for the master’s program in Musicology.
d) The final exam for the C2 certificate (according to the Goethe Institute classification system)
for doctoral studies in Musicology.
Additionally, language certificates of the University Language Forums, the IDaF institute Düsseldorf, the Institute for International Communication Düsseldorf (IIC) and adult education centers are recognized, but must be comparable with the above requirements. The relevant language course must be completed with an exam. A certificate of participation will not be accepted.
Note: Online language courses will not be accepted without a final exam.
Candidates who pass the proficiency test but cannot provide evidence of the required command of the German language at the beginning of the semester can submit the necessary documentation in the course of their first year. Students registering under these circumstances have the legal status of a Studienkolleg student (a first-year preparatory program for academic studies) at the university.
