Born 1973 in Silver Spring (USA), Tobias Fleig studied mechanical engineering at RWTH Aachen University. After an intensive musical education in childhood, Tobias started playing in bands in high school as drummer, guitarist, and singer. After graduating, he started his career as a musician and recording engineer at TV music studios in Cologne, where he developed musical compositions for television shows. From there, he went on to the House of Promotion, a RTL subsidiary, before landing a permanent position as sound engineer at Dortmund’s RuhrsoundStudios in 1997. Since 1999, he’s been self-employed, operating his own recording studio in Cologne and, since 2014, a mixing studio for feature films as part of MPS Sonnenstudio GmbH in Berlin.
Over the course of his career, Tobias has worked as a sound designer or re-recording mixer [JK1] [PA2] on more than 100 feature films, including The Counterfeiters (Die Fälscher), winner of the 2008 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film; Lebanon, winner of the 2009 Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival; Bal (Honey), winner of the 2010 Golden Bear at the Berlinale; and Little Joe, selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at Cannes in 2019. In 2018, he won the Austrian Film Award for Best Sound Editing for his work on Untitled, and in 2019, the German Film Award for Best Sound Editing for his work on Styx.
Fleig teaches at several universities, including the Konrad Wolf Film University of Babelsberg in Berlin-Potsdam and the Filmakademie Baden Württemberg in Ludwigsburg. He’s a member of the Deutsche Filmakademie (German Film Academy), the Filmton e.V. (bvft) professional association, and the Association of German Sound Engineers (VDT).
He’s been a lecturer in Dramaturgical Sound Design at the Institute for Music and Media at Robert Schumann University in Düsseldorf since 2020.
