Born in 1960, Thomas Sehringer began his studies in musicology in Heidelberg before transferring to the Erich Thienhaus Institute at the University of Music Detmold, where he graduated with a degree in Sound Engineering in 1985.
That same year, he settled in Cologne and began working as a freelance sound engineer and mixer in all realms of music production, music recording, sound reinforcement, radio and podcast production, and television sound, with a focus on pop/rock/jazz. His wide-ranging career included work at WDR (primarily at WDR Big Band and WDR Rockpalast); sound reinforcements, recordings, and live broadcasts at the Cologne jazz club Stadtgarten; work in all the major Cologne recording studios (including EMI Electrola, Dierks Studio, Sound Studio N, Studio Cornet); and television sound for shows, talk shows, sports, series, and more (including MMC, Video Company, TV Mobil). The musical styles featured in his portfolio are as diverse as his clients: jazz, pop, rock, metal, folk, schlager, traditional, and musical theater.
From 1988 to 2011, Sehringer was a lecturer at the IMM in various subjects, including radio and podcast production, sound reinforcement, studio hardware, and miking; for two semesters, he also served as a substitute academic chair. Since 2001, Sehringer has been employed as a sound engineer by WDR Cologne in the Music and Large-Scale Productions department, where he is entrusted with all kinds of music recording and broadcasting, from church services to rock festivals, comedy events to new music, the WDR4 carnival party to Cologne’s Eight Bridges festival.
In the summer semester of 2021, Sehringer was appointed Substitute Professor of Music Production at the Institute for Music and Media.
