Dieter Fleischmann, born 1959 in Nuremberg, studied Photography/ Film Design at Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences. Alongside conceptual photography and photojournalism, film and animated film were the other main areas of his study programme, in which he graduated with the Diplom degree in Design.
In 1986, he undertook a 6-month internship in the animated film studio of the WDR (West German Radio) in Cologne, which involved the production of a wide range of works for showing as part of regular day-to-day broadcasting.
From 1987, he worked as a photo/ film designer at a film production firm in Düsseldorf/ Hilden. Here, he was creatively involved in the production of image films for major international companies, combining sophisticated real-life shooting with unusual animation/ special effects photography (super-high speed, time lapse, slit scan), medical and scientific films, as well as logo animations and also trailers and title sequences for cinema feature films.
In 1998, he set up in business as a freelance photo/ film designer in Düsseldorf. Since then, work commissions, teaching and working on his own themes have formed a triangle of coordinates between which he moves and within which he feels very much at ease.
The projects of special interest he has worked on include the 30-minute video documentation for the Theatre Museum in Düsseldorf (2008, in coproduction with Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences) about the baroque opera at the court of the Prince Elector Jan Wellem, to mark the 350th anniversary of the birth of the latter. This allowed Dieter Fleischmann to combine all three areas of his work in one production.
Since 1991, Dieter Fleischmann has been teaching at the Faculty of Design at Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences as a lecturer in Animation Film.
And since 2010 he has been Assistant Professor for Visual Composition Camera at the Institute For Music And Media of Robert Schumann School of Music and Media in Düsseldorf.
