The installation a synchronous musician describes the simultaneously asynchronous and synchronous relationship between a metronome and a person playing snare drum. Alexander Borowski explores the simultaneity of apparent opposites in this way.
In the ebb and flow of their synchronicity, the metronome’s function of setting the beat is reversed. In a direct comparison of the mechanical device and the snare drum being played, varying the tempo confounds the sense of which of the two is playing what rhythm. The snare drum plays the hands, the metronome plays the time.
a synchronous musician by Alexander Borowski was an exam project for the Visual Music major at the Institute of Music and Media of the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf. The project was supervised by Prof. Dr. Heike Sperling and Marcus Schmickler.
