Inside the Surface

A fictional radio play by Joseph Baader.
Carried out at the Sibelius Academy Helsinki and in the Music and Text major at the Institute for Music and Media Düsseldorf. Supervised by Alejandro Montes de Oca and Marc Matter.
The narrators are Mikael Hakkarainen and Eeva Rajakangas.

He set off with an ice hockey stick, a cassette recorder and two microphones. Then things were rubbed, scratched, pound on and ‒ recorded. Sounds that arose when the hockey stick glided over different surfaces. He collected and archived these tonal properties of objects hidden in their material and their surface, meticulously arranging them by date and origin. Shortly after his death, interested scientists studied his archives and immersed themselves in a strange, poetic world of surfaces.

Inside the Surface was broadcast as a radio play installation as part of the LTK4 exhibition in the Lutherturm Cologne from October 30 to November 13. It was also nominated for the ARD PiNBall Award, the freelance short play radio prize. The awards ceremony took place on November 7, 2019 at the Radio Play Festival at the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe.
