Sergei Rachmaninoff – Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor
Master’s program Artistic Music Production - Workshop with Technical University Berlin alumnus graduate engineer Stefan Flock
In October 2018 a workshop on the topic of piano production was conducted within the framework of the master’s program Artistic Music Production (Major: Classical Acoustic Music Production) in the The Partikasaal. Graduate engineer Stefan Flock, who completed an Audio and Video degree program at the IMM, was a guest lecturer. Stefan Flock, who graduated from the Robert Schumann School of Music and Media Düsseldorf in the 1990s, now works as a sound editor and recording engineer at the Emil Berliner Studios with pianists such as Helène Grimaud and Lang Lang.
In the first part of the workshop, Stefan Flock demonstrated his own work style on the basis of his own piano productions. In the second part, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor was produced with the pianist Yaozong Song (master class of Prof. Georg Friedrich Schenck). During this, various microphones and microphone positions were compared and different ways of mixing discussed and tried out.
During the production, the students Hari Yim and Lennard Schubert were music recording directors and were responsible for editing and final mixing.
