Anton Bruckner: Symphony No. 9 in D minor

[Translate to Englisch:]

In the winter semester 2016/17, students in the advanced-level Classical Music Recording module by Prof. Dagmar Birwe once again had the opportunity to produce a full-scale program performed by the University Orchestra of the Robert Schumann University during rehearsals. Anton Bruckner’s 9th Symphony was performed under the baton of Prof. Rüdiger Bohn and coordinated by the three sound technicians (1st movement: Daniel Przemus, 2nd movement: Celia Ruiz Artacho, 3rd movement: Sebastian Fecke).

In preparation for the project, a detailed analysis of the symphony score was carried out along with the conductor, and various recordings by well-known orchestras were compared. The setup of the microphones was adapted to match the work and placement of the orchestra members and, thanks to the extensive equipment available, allowed some leeway for experimental and comparative microphone positions.

During the four-day recording session, students were able to try out the roles of recording producer, sound engineer and tape operator, and to familiarize themselves with how orchestral recording productions are carried out. Working together with musicians on the best possible recording of the work was an enriching experience for everybody involved.

Post-production of the recording was carried out with the respective sound technicians and the two sound engineers (Lukas Hierl and Lukas Prinz), and completed in close collaboration with the conductor.
